West Virginia: A Hiker's Paradise
I embarked on a journey through the Appalachian Trail, a path that led me to the heart of West Virginia. With only 4 miles of the trail running through the state, it might seem like a small stretch, but it was an experience like no other. The day before Mother's Day, I set out with a plan to hike 18 miles, but fate had other ideas.
As I ventured into the trail, the excitement of my daughter's surprise visit in Harper's Ferry fueled my determination. I decided to push myself further, aiming to hike an impressive 28 miles that day. The Appalachian Trail, known for its challenges, offered a roller coaster of terrain, with steep climbs and rocky paths. I counted eight 'pulls' along the way, each demanding my full strength.
The 1000-mile marker, a significant milestone, boosted my morale. However, the trail's difficulty became apparent as I navigated through the muggy weather, relying on the FarOut app for guidance. The white blazes, sometimes elusive, added to the complexity. I even found myself turning around a few times, a testament to the trail's unpredictability.
The real test came three miles before the Bears Den hostel. The dreaded 'wall' hit me like a ton of bricks, both physically and mentally. I had to stop, eat, and gather my energy to complete the final stretch. When I finally reached the hostel, I was greeted by the sound of banging and the sight of a locked door. With determination, I knocked louder, and thankfully, a fellow hiker, Groot, came to my aid.
The next morning, I awoke refreshed, having experienced the hostel's comforts. The views from Bear's Den Rocks were breathtaking, but the rain loomed, reminding me of the remaining 20 miles to Harper's Ferry. The final stretch of the roller coaster proved less grueling, and soon enough, I crossed into West Virginia, a state that welcomed me with open arms.
Harper's Ferry, with its ATC Conservancy, became a symbol of triumph. The volunteers and staff's kindness left a lasting impression. My daughter's arrival and the opportunity to spend quality time with her made the journey even more special. West Virginia, with its beauty and hospitality, became a source of inspiration, reminding me that dreams are within reach.
